In June 2011, Canada's top five retailers announced they would require suppliers to shift to PET for clamshell packaging in an effort to streamline recycling. The requirement, which the new test protocol for labels and adhesives is part, has become mandatory since Jan. 1, 2012. This product launch is part of a platform of technologies designed to support the Canadian PET thermoform recycling initiative. The new Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers' (APR) protocol helps identify a pressure-sensitive laminate that satisfies the need to adhere and be removed prior to recycling, thereby allowing PET thermoformed packaging to be recycled in an efficient manner.
As the leader in sustainable labeling and green label materials Label Impressions has been monitoring the APR's progress with regard to this issue and has approved several label materials that have passed the APR's stringent standards for PET recycling.
Among Label Impressions' available PET recycling program labels are both paper and film stocks, direct thermal printable or thermal transfer printable labels, clear, white, matte clear and ultra clear labels with freezer and cold temperature adhesives.
